Douglass Rice was born in La Jolla, California in 1952. He was raised in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, and moved to New York City in 1987. He studied painting and sculpture at Phillips Exeter Academy and Stanford University, from which he received a BA in 1974.
He has also studied painting at the Mendocino Art Center, San Francisco City College and the School for Visual Arts. He has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and shows in San Francisco, Stonington and New York, and his work is owned by collectors in those cities, as well as in Los Angeles, Stockholm and Hong Kong.
His work has been influenced by such diverse sources as Picasso, Pollock, Warhol, Kahlo and Mexican folk art, among others.
Douglass lives in New York City and Stonington with his wife and two children.
